Everything is An Argument!

My students need to have a class set of the The World Is Flat in order to have rigorous non fiction texts to analyze in my AP English Language and Composition class.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are facing the challenge of the end of the year AP Exam, which is akin to preparing for a marathon. The theme of our class is Everything is An Argument, so my task is finding engaging texts that grab their interest and provide a platform for some debate!

They are a wonderfully unique group of students from all over the world.

I teach in the heart of Washington D.C and literally have students from three or four different continents as well as students who were born and raised just down the road from the school. We are not lacking for diversity of opinions, learning styles, and languages! Naturally, as teenagers, they love to air their opinions and debates come easily in my class, which as I previously mentioned is a goal of the course. For some of these students, they are being truly challenged by the difficulty of an AP course for the first time, and although it is tough, most students respond very well to raising the bar. Overall, out of my student teaching and previous years teaching in another state, the students at my current school are the most special and rewarding to teach I have ever known. I feel lucky to be able to work with them.

My Project

The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman is essentially a broad overview of how globalization and the rise of the Internet have created conditions in which the world economies are becoming more equal. It is the perfect sort of text for this class because it is rigorous, it offers up controversial premises upon which the students can take a position, and it provides unique perspectives on important historical events and world trends, which is key in expanding their general knowledge of the world in which they live.

In order to fully prepare for the difficulty of the AP Exam my students need to be exposed to a broad set of texts, as they will find passages on the exam ranging from current socioeconomic trends to seventeenth century speeches from Queen Elizabeth.

Although I do have students at varying reading levels and levels of proficiency in English, exposing them to difficult texts with high levels of support is the only way to truly prepare them for what they face both on the AP Exam and in college!
