Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ask some of my students what they think of science, and you'll get an answer that reflects some of our greatest fears of the future: Not interested. Too hard. Don't get it. What's the point? Science, the application of knowledge, MEANS "knowledge" in Latin. Let's show students WHY science is cool.

Our school, in the South Bronx, is filled with some of the most capable underachievers I've ever met.

Without a doubt, every one of my students can do great in my science class, but fewer than half ever make more than a token effort. These kids need to see the upside of education big time. Forget about the cultural diversity, the economics, the demographics, the hardships and ghetto analogies. We need to kick up our game several notches, and that means pull out the stops and bring them a real educational experience with which they they can relate and which will inspire them. How? Not really sure, but how about calling in the experts even if they happen to be only on the web or on a DVD? Show them what's cool about what we teach, even if that means showing pictures and animations on the wall. And it means communicating with everyone and everything, to show them how small a world we really live in, and how incredibly alike we all are, in every corner of the globe, in every way, bar none.

My Project

Every notebook is a doorway. And every doorway provides students with a peek into the underbelly of a part of the Universe with which they know very little, fear a lot, and really don't want to study. For 75% of my students, science is not a career choice simply because it seems so impossible, so out of reach, and so hard. But that's where all the work is! Earth Sciences like geology (natural resources), meteorology (climate change) or astronomy (life beyond earth?) are exploding with new discoveries and technologies. Yet these same sciences are dying from a shortage of good people to figure out how to fix everything that seems to be going wrong, or look at all the new stuff we're seeing with these great new technological toys. What to do? Everything we can, which includes bringing students all the cool tools we can. What's the best way to give them a peek at new learning opportunities in the quickest time? Can't imagine anything better than a fast, linked, loaded portable computer.

Ever hear the expression "cheap is expensive?" Some of our school systems harshest critics deride the axiom, but practice it in secret.

And what's the upshot? They are shortchanging the future by denying the youngest generation their shot at making everything better for everyone. Sure, the young will inherit everything regardless, either because of or in spite of those who stand in their way. Tools, resources, ideas, options, improvements and, above all, opportunities are what's central here.
