This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the feeling of solving a challenging problem and wanting to run around the room screaming, "I got it!" ? I want to give my students the chance to SHOW the room they "got it."

Working in the poorest congressional district in the country, my students come in at a wide range of academic levels.

They are enthusiastic and hard working, but many have large gaps in knowledge, number sense and/or basic math skills. This year, we began a weekly problem solving initiative at my school to tackle challenging problems alone or in pairs. They spend a class period working on the problem and continue at home to produce polished pieces that document their mathematical thinking. One of the most successful aspects of this initiative was having students present their work to the class. This would be so much more powerful with a document camera to show their actual process as they go.

My Project

My students need a document camera to present their work to their classmates. A document camera will allow them to put their work on display to be critically analyzed by their peers. It will allow their classmates to not only see their answers but see how they communicated their mathematics in writing. This will help all my students bring their written mathematics work to the next level by analyzing each Other's strengths and weaknesses. It will also help them to build their ability to construct an argument and present it to their peers, a critical component of the new common core standards. Already, I have seen an improvement in my students' work from the presentations. A document camera will make an even more profound difference.

Looking at each others' work has been proven to help students learn better.

Learning to communicate mathematics is sometimes more difficult than solving the problems themselves! Please help us by giving us the resources to do this most effectively!
