Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Informational texts are challenging to read. Imagine yourself attempting to comprehend an informational text in a language that you are still learning. The task seems near impossible. However, my students do this every day.
I have 24 AMAZING, hard-working, and courageous third graders in my class.
90% of them are English language learners who are currently living at or below the line of poverty. They endure many hardships and challenges in their neighborhood which is filled with gang activity and crime, yet they come to school happy and eager to learn each day.
My Project
Because the majority of my students come from families who struggle financially, they typically are unable to see or experience much of the world beyond their small community. Reading, particularly nonfiction texts, is such a valuable experience for my third graders as it takes them on journeys to unimaginable places, gives them time to explore their own wonders, and allows them to explore the world. If it weren't for reading, they may have limited knowledge of the wonders and beauties of the world.
Donating to our project will make a HUGE difference to my students.
My students will develop into deeper, more critical thinkers through the reading of nonfiction texts which requires asking questions and determining importance. They will continue to make steady progress in their reading with books at their independent level. Most importantly, they will be more excited about reading by exploring their interests and things they are curious about!
