Enhancing the Vision of Science

My students need a digital microscope to experience the interface between science and technology and delve into applying its capabilities.

Teaching high school science is one of the most rewarding and challenging jobs one could undertake. It's fulfilling in helping students learn to question and envision the world through the eyes of a scientist. The challenge is in finding the best way to reveal that world, no matter how real, small, large, or abstract it may be.

To see the world as a scientist, one must become a scientist. But as a biologist where does that process begin? There is an overwhelming amount of life to rummage through, but a good starting point may be the unit of life itself--the cell. Let's explore the microscopic nature of life at the cellular level and begin to document all the action that is happening. Everyday we can experiment, witness, and record the life of a cell and begin to relate it back to how our bodies are a complex system of cells, working in unison to provide us life. Each the day, the world of a scientist in the boots of a biologist will walk billions of nanometers to understand life.

The classroom is already fitted with a set of educational microscopes. In order to enhance student's understanding of how to use them properly and what to look for under the lens, a digital microscope can easily be connected to a computer and then display its images through a projector. Students will easily see the projection and know what to look for in their investigations. The interface between scientific devices and technology will also be explored, as a digital microscope can lead into questions about about current digital microscopy tools and image enhancement. The visualization of the biological world is an interesting current focus to engage the class with; scientists look to improve the ways with which we can look at life on the microscopic level and understand its mechanisms. Overall, the device will become another extension of our class's five senses through which we can explore the intriguing world of science.

Your contribution will help build the next wave of scientists that will explore the world with an inquisitive eye and a reputable purpose. You can help ensure that today's students will be well prepared for the technological discussions of tomorrow through their experiences in combining science with technology.
