In my literacy class for English Language Learners my students speak 8 different languages. Some have just moved to the U.S. and have never studied English before while others have lived here for several years but struggle with math. I want to engage them all and remind them learning can be fun!
My students are in it to win it.
They see the value of learning another language so that they can have more employment opportunities and will be able to support their families. Approximately 90% of them receive free or reduced lunch. Some are not only learning English as a second language but also have learning disabilities and receive Special Education services. Our school is welcoming to everyone but lacks the resources to provide hands-on activities to more than a few students at a time.
My Project
I will use these games in my classroom to help my students reflect on the English that they already know and the English that they need to utilize in different settings. I always have them play in pairs so that they have to develop teamwork skills. Once my students know how to play these games they can borrow them to teach their families how to play. My hope is that they will put down their cell phones and spend some time talking to other people face to face!
These activities will make my classroom much more dynamic, and will save me a lot of preparation time.
In the past I've made my own games out of recycled materials. Your donation will allow me to devote more of my time to helping my students become more self-reflective, set personal goals, and demonstrate their achievement.
