Engaging Environment Where Students WANT to Read and Write!

My students need books (1-2 copies each of 57 titles and 3 copies of "You Hear Me?: Poems and Writing by Teenage Boys") that they can read and talk about in partnerships. The post-it notes will help them gather their thoughts to have meaningful conversations about books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Ms., this book is LIVE!" Most of my students have now found a way to love reading their own books. Now comes the next step. Having important discussions about books with each other. My students and I want to try partnerships and book clubs this year. We need multiple copies of books!

My students are the some of the most honest individuals I know.

They have several deficit labels placed upon them. Labels that don't affect their attitudes at all. 8th graders are on the brink of high school. A place that will easily determine whether or not they are a successful adult. I want my students to be successful. All of them. I want them to be able to have important conversations about books, with the hopes that they can connect their books to themselves, their community, and their world. I want them to leave 8th grade knowing their place in this world.

My Project

The books I have listed deal with issues like suicide, race, gender, social development, drugs, gangs, and poverty. My students will learn strategies and behaviors readers have to write, read, and talk about texts and the issues in them. By the end of the school year, the hope is that my students will be able to self-initiate these behaviors and make a positive difference in the world they live in.

Since I'm trying to prove to my students they have a place, an importance, in this world, your donation will make a big difference.

My students will be able to see their are people outside of our school and state that WANT them to be successful young adults.
