This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are in wheelchairs and have disabilities such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida. We begin the day in a group where we address various early learning skills such as calendar and time telling skills. Later in the day we use special equipment to address mobility and motor skills.
My classroom is an ungraded special day class on an elementary school campus in California.
My students are in grades K through 8 with moderate to severe physical, cognitive, and speech impairments. All of my students require assistance with feeding, mobility and other life skills. They also require adaptive devices and equipment to assist with their instructional needs.
My Project
My students have goals which are written into their educational programs which involve the use of technology during various individual and group activities. These activities include the following:
1) Using the computer, Internet, wireless switch and flat screen TV to present group lessons which include picture vocabulary and communication skills, language arts, math, calendar, time, money, and rhythmic music skills.
2) Using the computer, special keyboard and flat screen TV to:
a) Identify colors, shapes and letters.
b) Type sight words, sentences and personal information such as name and address.
c) Perform basic math skills such as identifying numbers, counting and addition.
I've been teaching special students for 25 years and I am committed to developing more efficient and successful methods of instruction. The iMac in this project will be a valuable tool in helping my special students achieve these goals, activities and skills outlined above.
My students are non-verbal and physically impaired, and cannot express themselves through conventional pencil and paper methods.
My approach to teaching these students is to enable them through the use of adaptive technology such as computers, switches and keyboards which allow the students to respond and provide input to the lesson. Your donations will be enabling to my students and will help improve the quality of life for them.
