EmpowHered Girls Program

My students need 57 copies of "Respect", providing books to support the social and emotional development of our EmpowHER young ladies.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What happens when at-risk girls and women are offered even modest opportunities for self-driven success? Our goal is to reduce the school dropout rate for low-income middle and high school girls who are at risk of educational failure due to teen pregnancy, truancy, and juvenile delinquency.

Picture a 7th grade girl who has no idea why she should finish school.

She doesn't know her mother, who has either been on drugs or in prison most of her life. She lives in foster care and has had six different homes in eight years. She feels that nobody really cares whether she succeeds or fails, and she sees school as a path less traveled. She thinks her best chance for happiness in life is to get a boyfriend, which she does. Predictably, he ends up mistreating her. She also believes her best chance for survival is to get pregnant and move out on her own, living on Public Assistance. We see girls at risk as a community responsibility. It is our responsibility. They are our daughters, our nieces, our cousins, and our sisters. They are our girls. We believe it's our business to connect with these young ladies and introduce them to their own talents and capabilities so they will be less likely to drop out of school and more likely to earn a better future for themselves.

My Project

The Respect book, which is a component of our life skills curriculum, provides a background and launching pad to dialog with young ladies about giving and receiving the respect they deserve! More specifically we are able to talk about being honest, setting boundaries, and creating better family relationships. This resource also helps to open the discussion on tough issues such discrimination, dating violence, abuse, sexual harassment and assault, alcohol and drugs. Students will be able to utilize this book in and outside of the classroom environment as a reflection tool, referring to the activities, journal exercises, and quotes and ideas from other teen girls.

Our hope is that each girl can have her own copy to use as a resource in and outside of the classroom.

We want these girls to continue to use this book as a guide throughout their adolescent and teen experience.
