Empowering Students Through Art: Flashy Foldables

My students need art supplies (paper, markers, colored pencils, glue, and scissors) to create their own art-infused, creative study tools for all subject areas.

My Students

I am working to turn our media center into a vibrant, creative space for a great crowd of energetic middle school students at a high poverty school. As a low-performing school, we are looking for creative ways to advance students' learning. Vocabulary instruction is a critical school-wide focus.

My students are curious, energetic, and social.

They enjoy hands-on learning experiences and love to engage their creative sides in a wide variety of projects. We are working hard with a very small budget to provide our students the experiences they need, desire, and deserve. My students love projects that incorporate art. They enjoy creating vocabulary cartoons and other engaging study tools. Providing markers, colored pencils, art paper, and index cards will help me supply students with the tools they need to enhance their learning experiences, exercise their creativity, and make their study time more interactive.

My Project

The resources requested will be used to build a foldable creation station in our school library media center. Teachers will provide study terms from all classes. My students will use scissors, glue, colorful paper, markers, and colored pencils to produce creative flash cards as well as 2D and 3D foldable study guides to use for vocabulary and concept study. A great deal of research shows that creating colorful study tools with personal artistic representations helps students to study more efficiently and learn vocabulary more effectively. Students will add relevant artwork examples to their vocabulary study tools, allowing them to elaborate on the meaning of key words, deepen their understanding of concepts, and make important personal connections which deepen their understanding. Students will illustrate word meanings, graphically outline steps in processes, and visually represent relationships between word parts to extend their understanding and delve further into academic concepts.

An organized and creative academic space in the media center will allow students who can't purchase their own art supplies to engage in a creative activity.

Students will be more engaged when vocabulary study is enriched with art and they are able to add their own personal connections or visually illustrate the steps in a process. Students' learning will increase through the hands-on, empowering experience of creating their own colorful and personally meaningful study tools.
