Empowering Students: Organizing For Standards

My students need binders and dividers to help them stay organized. We are moving to standards-based grading; students will be tracking their achievement using a portfolio.

My Students

What does a grade mean? My students will have a better idea than ever when we begin our standards-based grading system next year, which will require them to track their achievements, reflect on their learning, and to document that learning with a portfolio.

My students are a multi-racial, multi-ethic group, who attend an International Baccalaureate high school.

A large percentage of them qualify for free and reduced lunch, and a large percentage of them are immigrants themselves. They are proud to attend this school, and enthusiastic about their learning, both in class and in extracurricular activities.

My Project

My students need binders and dividers to help them stay organized. We are moving to standards-based grading; students will be tracking their achievement using a portfolio. So many of my students come to me and ask, "Why is my grade a 'C'?" Traditional grading attempts to average and assign a number to a bundle of standards, behaviors, etc. In contrast, standards-based grading is exciting because it is a way of evaluating student work that gets at exactly what they know and can do. It is empowering for students because it is so explicit. They know what they have achieved, to what level, and what to do next. It is separated from behaviors like lateness, lack of motivation, etc, which are addressed in other more appropriate ways. In this system, students have an increased chance at success because of the transparency of what they must learn and their progress. Students will be able to organize their work into a portfolio, track their progress, reflect on their work, share it with others, and explain their strengths, weakness, progression, and goals to their parents, to me, to their peers, and anyone else who asks.

All students can benefit from this approach as they can clearly see successes and have much more control over their learning process.

Organization on my and my students™ parts will be imperative. There will be a lot of data to track, but the onus will be on students to track much of it. When students know exactly what is involved in the learning process, motivation skyrockets. And, that is the key. Because motivation drives learning. Sometimes it is as simple as organization.
