One of the mottos of our science classroom is "Science is Everything!" This year I have challenged all of my students to discover their inner scientist. With your assistance, my 10th grade Living Environment students will have a rich lab experience that will bring photosynthesis, one of the most challenging scientific concepts, to life. Our school is unique, being one of two public, all-male, high schools in the area. Located in a high needs community, we are constantly seeking creative ways to fulfill our mission to transform students into scholars and develop young men of character.

With massive state and city budget cuts, we are not able to afford supplies to fully equip our science labs. Hands-on and minds-on lab activities are essential to improve science literacy. Students in the U.S. are 21st in the world in science when compared with students of 30 industrialized countries. The critical thinking and problem solving skills that students gain through scientific inquiry will help them have greater success in high school and college which will ultimately enable them to be more competitive in an increasingly global economy.

In this lab activity, we will be exploring photosynthesis using Elodea as a model organism. Photosynthesis is a process that is essential for all living organisms and is one of the most challenging life science concepts for many students to understand. At our school, we have some of the equipment that we need to complete the lab, but need additional supplies. A light box is needed to provide light for the Elodea samples, flasks and graduated cylinders are needed for measuring and transferring liquid; parafilm is needed to provide secure, airtight/water-tight coverage for test tubes.

With your help, my students can have the rich lab experience that will bring the concept of photosynthesis to life and help me to achieve my goal of uncovering the inner scientist in each of them.
