My Students

My high school Beginning ELL students come to my classroom with very little English. Some are absolutely beginning readers. Some read at a 1st or 2nd grade level. It is hard for them to find accessible but not childish reading materials.

My students come from all over the world: East Africa, Latin America, Asia.

Some of them have a high academic level in their first language, but others come to our high poverty school with very little schooling. All of them are motivated to learn English, but the challenge is jumping into a high school setting as a Beginner. They need to learn English, but they also need to continue learning content such as social studies so they do not fall too far behind academically. Many of them strive to eventually earn high school diplomas.

My Project

As a writing teacher, I strive to help them learn English while they learn more about the U.S. through U.S. History and Social Studies topics. I start the year with immigration topics that they can connect with, share their own experience, and learn about the roots of the U.S. The books I have requested will help teach students more about immigration, the roots of U.S. History, Democracy and Citizenship, Native American history, and the Civil Rights Movement. We will read some of these books as read-alouds to engage the students in the units. Some of the books will be great for students to read in conjunction with the unit work in small groups or individually. Some books will be used in group research projects.

These books share a large amount of important and inspiring U.S.

History. If others could do it before, so can my students....make their way in a new country and culture, learn a new language, and make their lives better.
