Egg-citing Life Cycle for Primary Students

My students need incubators with egg turners and hands-on chick life cycle demonstration kits to explore the life cycle of a chick in our life science unit for the 2012-2013 school year.

My Students

Remember what it was like to find a bird's nest with eggs in it and you wanted to watch them hatch. My students are just as curious but there is no funding for elementary science in our school budget. Help our first graders eagerly watch eggs hatch in their very own classroom incubators.

My first graders live in a high poverty rural community in Kansas.

There are about 60 boys and girls in the four first grade classrooms in my building. They are inquisitive first grade students who love to learn. Their little faces light up with the wonder of grasping a new concept or discovering the mystery that is science. They learn best by doing.

My Project

I am requesting two incubators with egg turners and two hands-on chick life cycle demonstration kits. The kits include 21 heavy duty plastic eggs which show the daily development of the chicks. We will be able to share these two incubators between four classrooms. The boys and girls are naturally curious and interested in science. It is our goal to motivate them to explore the world they live in. With the incubators, the students will experience first hand how a chick hatches. Right now we have to watch it on video, this does not give them a clear picture of how long it takes a chick to hatch. We want to give these boys and girls real world experiences they will not receive at home. Through our efforts, we work diligently to enrich their education. But if all we have are videos, our efforts fall short. These young children deserve more from their education.

Our state science standards require us to teach life cycles in first grade.

We love to watch our caterpillars emerge from their chrysalises, our tadpoles morph into frogs, and even watch ladybugs go through their life cycle. One thing we have not been able to accomplish is to give our students the real world experience of watching chicks hatch. By donating to our project, we will be able to purchase two incubators with egg turners to share between four first grade classrooms.
