Eastern's Outdoor Classroom & Garden Initiative

My students need gardening tools for our outdoor classroom and garden. Students will be using the garden to increase engagement in science.

My Students

A typical day in our high school involves a lot of textbooks or digital equipment, and very few opportunities to engage in practical, hands-on observation of biology in the outdoors. It is our goal, with the outdoor classroom and garden, to provide such a workspace for students to apply scientific principles in nature.

Our school is a suburban high school, with 2100 students.

It is a huge undertaking to provide students with authentic and challenging academic scenarios for real-world application. We have a mixed group of students with 32% on a free and reduced lunch program, making for a unique and diverse student population. Our science scores typically are lower than we'd like to see. I would describe our students as mostly able to engage in a variety of educational experiences, but without the exposure to gardening, urban gardening, slow food or a general understanding of where their food comes from.

My Project

The students would directly use the equipment to cultivate and care for the raised bed gardens that we will be building in April 2016. This would be a shared set. It would be used by not only our science students, but also the classes and environmental clubs actively engaged in managing the beds during the school year. It will impact at least 600 students in our science courses. It is our hope that through this project, students will develop a keen awareness of the food and growing cycles and take that knowledge back to their own communities teaching others how to grow their own food.Through this process we hope student learning will positively impact test scores in the sciences.

This project will transform not only the students involved, but also the surrounding community.

Our gardens are being built on our old tennis courts on the property. It would have cost too much money to recondition the courts, so they have been left idling for the last 5 years. In collaboration with our science, art, and technology departments, we have developed a plan to rehabilitate the nearly 1/2 acre area into a viable outdoor classroom and green space. This project has a 5-year growth plan.
