E-Readers Motivate and Inspire Positive Behavior

My students need an ereader to be used as an incentive to inspire good behavior, positive citizenship, and kind deeds.

My Students

"I don't need easy, I just need possible," Bethany Hamilton said, and my school is striving to create a positive behavior incentive program that rewards our at-risk students by awarding them free time using an e-reader.

Our district is located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

There isn't a more beautiful place on earth, but due to our long winters and closed campus policy, our students are stuck indoors for months at a time and eventually this leads to some negative behavior. I would like to create a positive behavior incentive program that would reward students for their behavior and provide them opportunities to use cool e-readers. It is a great behavior motivator and gets them reading, just in a cool new way.

My Project

I see our students energized about reading when they have access to the new e-readers. Middle School students find reading on an e-reader to be cool, so more kids are doing it. We are allowing students who have e-readers to use them in class when they have free time to read and we are especially seeing an increase in the number of males who are reading. E-readers also have the option of adding applications that create another alternative to just reading. I am especially excited about how this will affect our at-risk student population. These students do no have their own e-reader so the option of using one at school that is linked to positive behavior is a win/win opportunity.

This positive behavior project in our middle school will impact the student population, but will primarily motivate and inspire our at-risk students while also providing them opportunities to read and learn in a "cool" way.
