E-Books for Struggling Readers

My students need 2 e-readers.

My Students

As a 23 year veteran teacher, I have always known the importance of a good book, of wanting to read, not having to read. As a new father, I see the joy in my daughter's eyes when given a new book. I want that same look from all of my students.

I deal with all students in my school.

I find that many see the computer, or any technology, as a cool way to do things. Reading is no different. We are a public elementary school with beautiful students, who show grit on a regular basis. Some of our students come from disadvantaged homes, and sadly, though not a reason to be poor readers, some of them struggle. It is our job to help.

My Project

I am requesting 2 e-readers to help begin a class (or more) set to help struggling readers hit their goals, find time to read because they want to, not because they have to. Reading opportunities should be available at all times, and with the help of these e-books, students might get a little more courage, a little more pride in saying that they are reading a book.

As a new parent, my vision of education has changed greatly.

My eyes are more open to the responsibilities of a teacher, a mentor. Of course I want all of these kids to succeed, that is my job, my career, my desire. That said, I ask myself, "What kind of education do I want to see for my kids?" This is what drives me. If these e-books help just a handful, then that is success. Teachers teach, not for the income, but for the outcome.
