This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Tapping with your fingers! Tapping with your toes! Everybody's tapping, 'cause everybody knows that kids love making rhythm with their hands and feet! Having DRUMS in music would be a special treat!"

I teach general music in an inner city public school in Indiana.

Our school has almost 800 students who fortunately still have art, music, or physical education sometime during the day. We are a Title I school where every kindergarten through 8th grade student has free breakfast and lunch! Ten classes walk through my door daily: five in the morning and five in the afternoon. Every child has a different "story" but all have something in common: they are eager to learn! My students are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. They come to music willing to sing a new song, learn a folk dance, play a rhythm instrument, choreograph movement to a song, write a rap, work on a composer project, take tests, and write thank you letters to donors from DonorsChoose.org!

My Project

Magic happens in a drum circle, and we want that magic to happen in our music room! There are so many benefits of producing music, and each new opportunity needs to be encouraged! I want my students to experience another way in which they can make beautiful music through participation in a drum circle. Drumming has many positive benefits for children: teaches children to be more tolerant and open, allows the child to express himself creatively, bolsters self confidence, develops listening skills, teaches cooperation, utilizes every part of the brain, and is a great form of stress relief. By playing the tubanos, bongos, tambourine, and bodhran, my kids will not only have fun, but they will also learn about the heartbeat of various cultures. Because children make their own music, it teaches them to be self-aware, confident, and mature. This sounds like the perfect recipe for engaged and productive students, and this is what I want for the students who come to my classroom every day

It is so important that children learn to work together as a group, and being part of a drum circle will help them develop skills that will last a lifetime.

By participating in a drum circle, my students will not only have fun, but will also learn about music, rhythm, and world cultures. Please help give them the opportunity to make beautiful music by expressing themselves in a creative non-verbal way. Thank you for considering this project!
