My Students

Can you imagine a storm without the booming sound of thunder?

I teach music to over 700 kindergarten through fifth grade students at a public elementary school.

We live in a military community and have students from all over the country. We are a diverse school and have special needs students. As the music teacher, I try to connect music with other disciplines (science, math, and history) in order to teach basic concepts to our students. All the teachers at our school are very supportive and work together to make learning fun and creative.

My Project

My elementary students study weather each year in science. They also study about the rainforest. I would like to give them a hands on experience and allow them to create a sound storm using body percussion (snap, clap, stomp) and then transfer the sound composition to instruments. We have shakers for the rain and one rainstick but we need drums and 2 thunder tubes to help us reach our loud thundering peak as the storm grows in strength. Students have already learned songs about thermometers, humidity, and precipitation. These instruments can also be used to accompany our songs that we sing. We would like to perform these songs for our parents to show them how we connect science and music.

Not only will students use these instruments to connect their sound composition with their weather unit but they will have more instruments to play in music class during our rhythm unit.
