Driven Super Scientists Need Hands-On Materials to Learn!

My students need paint (to paint planets!), spools (to study kinetic energy!), M&Ms (to make a cell model!), etc. to make their own Science models and complete hands-on activities!

My Students

Imagine not speaking English, coming from a financially and emotionally unstable background, and scoring below basic on your last year's TCAP, YET being expected to master at least 80% of the objectives taught this year. Despite their drive, this is what my 100 ten-year-olds face every single day.

My 5th grade students come from all different backgrounds and have a variety of learning needs and styles.

Some of my students were born and raised in the United States, but a lot of my students and their families are from Spanish-speaking and Arabic-speaking countries. They attend a Title I school where 99% students receive free and reduced lunch due to lower household income. My students are eager to learn and take education very seriously. Most of them are visual and kinesthetic learners who benefit most from individualized, interactive, and hands-on instruction. Science can be very abstract and as 10- and 11-year-olds, they learn better through colors, things they can put their hands on, experiments they can conduct themselves, sounds they can list to, plants they can grow, planets they can paint, exercises they can do and activities that can get their creative juices flowing! Real-life hands-on activities help them understand the content better and relate it to their lives.

My Project

My project will help my students by opening up their eyes to the world of Science. Through the use of these materials, I would like to let my students experience hands-on and interactive learning. For example, using the M&Ms, paper plates and glue, students can create their own cell parts and label them. This will help them identify the different parts of a cell and retain their functions better. The students will be able to use the black construction paper and white crayons to trace out their own constellations, name them and write stories about them. Paper mache is the most fun way to learn about planets that students can make by using the paint and brushes that this project will provide. It will give the students a real-life experience to be able to use the molding clay to make their own earth and cut it to see the different layers. They can also use the same clay to learn about solids, liquids and gases as well as about mountain formations by creating their own mountains.

This project is very crucial to the lives of my low-income, poverty-stricken students because it will help them be successful in Science.

Fifth grade Science is so crucial for students because it gives students a foundation for the upper levels and makes them curious to learn and explore science. By helping me fulfill the needs of my classroom, you are contribution to the education of our next generation's doctors, scientists, astronauts, chemists, engineers, biologists, and many others!
