This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We read "The Lorax" & "Wacky Wednesday" many times during the school year. I share their favorite part of the book with you!☺ “Until someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” –The Lorax

Our students are placed in a specialized program called Life Skills, where my class implements an individualized educational plan designed by a team of administrators, teachers, parents and therapists.

I am reaching out to you to help me expand their interest in other books by Dr. Seuss. I work with a group of 9 vivacious, intellectually and developmentally disabled students that are experiencing academic and social challenges due to their low reading skills. Our students are 2-4 grade levels behind in academics and require specialized instruction. Collectively, we fell in love with Dr. Seuss and his Seussian style of illustrating. These books will support my teaching in 3 ways: inspire colorful reader responses, introduce students to rhyming, and be exposed to a variety of books from one author.

My Project

Our students need creative activities and strategies to engage them in learning at their level. They enjoy having a familiar focus in order to grasp strategies in reading comprehension. With that in mind, it is important for my students to be exposed to quality writing examples inspiring them to create their own poetry, a new focus for this year in our class.

There are many Dr. Seuss activities that will build reading comprehension and life lessons in a language they can grasp.

Our students will be exposed to a variety of Dr. Seuss books, which will expand their understanding of style in illustration, writing, and rhyming. Rhyming is an important skill as it helps connect new vocabulary to word families and phonemic awareness. Our students are mostly Spanish speakers and struggle with English, but they love Dr. Seuss!
