My students need hands on materials to understand the hard concept of elapsed time.

My Students

Do you know how hard it is to figure out elapsed time using just a clock? My 5th students keep counting round and round in a circle and get so lost along the way. I can simplify teaching this difficult concept by laying the numbers of the clock down from a circular design to a flat number line.

My students attend one of the poorest public schools in Louisiana.

The free and reduced lunch rate at my school is 87%. These students are in the 5th grade. The majority of my students come from a very under-privileged background. With that being said, my students are motivated to learn and want to achieve an education. My students are hungry for knowledge and have big goals to break the cycle of poverty that they come from.

My Project

These resources will help my students tremendously with elapsed time concepts. By turning the clock into a number line, students can easily calculate elapsed time. Currently, my students have to draw a number line out for the hours and draw a number line out for the minutes and it's just so time consuming. By providing them with these hands on tools, they learn from doing, not just by watching and drawing. Also, they can keep track of the time more efficiently compared to when they just use a clock. When they go around the clock multiple times, clock-wise or counterclock-wise, they lose track of the hours and minutes they've already counted. These tools will be invaluable to their learning.

The resources that I am asking for will benefit around 65 students a year in my class alone.

Also, I will share them with other teachers in my school. Finally, I will use them for years to come. The impact that you can make is unending. You will touch so many children's lives in such a positive way. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Please help my students, give them a chance to succeed. They are filled with the talent to achieve their goals, they just need to the tools to help them get there.
