This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I've created an environment in which students are willing to share their writing with others. I would like to capitalize on this by projecting student writing immediately after it is turned in. The document camera allows me to do this; students will receive instant, relevant feedback.

Most of my students have lived their whole lives in a small agricultural and rural town.

They all know each other very well--they are like siblings in many ways. In some classroom settings, it is difficult to share each others' work as it sometimes can raise the affective filter or make students unwilling participants when it comes to sharing their work. But in my classes, because they know each other so well and the students have come through elementary and junior high together, they have formed a unique bond and trust with one another.

My Project

With the use of a document camera, students will receive immediate feedback on their in-class writing assignments. The application for the document camera will be at both the AP and freshman level courses. The demand for student performance writing is a premium for AP students: they must perform for the AP exam each May, and the freshman English students will soon be required to write for their yearly assessment as we transition to the Common Core Assessments. The document camera will allow me to show the class exemplary examples of writing that they otherwise would be exposed to only rarely as it takes a lot of time and paper to reproduce sample work as a handout which usually ends up in the trash or recycle bin.

The document camera will provide a lasting and significant impression on student writers at all levels that I teach.

Knowing what "right" looks like is something I try to instill in student writers, the camera will allow students to also "see" what "right" looks like.
