Document Camera for Creative Writing

My students need a document camera in Creative Writing to be able to share their work with the class quickly and receive immediate feedback.

My Students

In my Creative Writing class, students are encouraged to share their work with each other in small groups before sharing with the whole class. This helps them grow their courage and develop a public voice for their piece. However, the class--as audience--rarely gets to SEE the pieces that are read.

Creative Writing has been a blessing for me.

It's a low-pressure elective where students who may not be the best at English Language Arts can still show what they're capable of in a warm and encouraging setting. My kids take advantage of the relative freedom and lack of judgment in the class to really break out of their comfort zones and stretch themselves.

My Project

A document camera would allow students to place the work in-progress up on the projector so that their classmates can read along as they share. I've found that oftentimes, a story read aloud SOUNDS much more refined than the final draft appears when they finally get around to typing it up and turning it in. I believe by putting the rough drafts up for everyone to see and comment on, my students will receive more useful feedback on their grammar, spelling and mechanics from their peers, so the final product will look as good as it sounds. We also have a vocabulary component for Creative Writing where students create posters on high-level vocabulary words and present them to the class. Since they're on 8.5x11 piece of paper, it's hard for the whole class to see and students in the back of the room often have to ask to have the posters passed around. A document camera would allow everyone to see the poster projected large on a screen.

Since we've already established a fairly comfortable environment in Creative Writing, I'd like to add this component to push them to improve their mechanical skills, too.

I think it'll make CW an even more valuable class in developing their writing ability.
