Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kids live in a very sheltered environment. They don't know about other cultures in their own city, let alone in the world.

My students are nine- year - olds who live in a urban area in New York.

They only know the culture around their block and in their classroom. They don't have the resources to travel to see how other people live. They don't have the resources to travel in their minds by reading books. They are mostly African American or Hispanic and are limited on the knowledge of other cultures besides those two.

My Project

I want to supply them with the resources they need to learn about how other people live. I want them to understand that it is okay to be different from what they are and know. We recently collected nickel bottles to pay for a cleft pallette surgery in a foreign country. The students were moved by the project with disregard of race. I want to continue that pride they felt by teaching them more about different cultures and their fight for freedom to be who they are. My kids know about Martin Luther King Jr. but they need to know the stories of others who are equally important and compelling. My project will celebrate different cultures while learning about civil rights movements in various cultures.

Knowledge is power.

If my students aren't taught that it is okay to be who you are and okay to accept someone who looks different, then they won't practice that in their lives. We will only perpetuate the stereotypes and hatred that the world is filled with now. Please work with me to make the world a better place one class at a time.
