Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We've all heard the phrase, 'Dress for Success.' What exactly does this mean? We all know the confidence that consumes us when we 'dress up.' Imagine how this feeling will motivate my young male students when all of them are able to wear a blazer & tie for our special Men Who Read Program!
My students face so many challenges, but they realize that education is the vehicle to drive them towards a more promising future.
With so many issues, it is my mission, as their educator, to take them away and rescue them from their pressing worries through the joys of meaningful experiences and exposure to what life has to offer.
Our school is 100% poverty stricken; with only one other in the state of South Carolina. We don't take this rank as an excuse to have a pity party, but rather as a means of motivation. We strive to plant seeds of hope and reassure the students that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success. By understanding that there is more to life than what meets the eye, it is my belief that my students will do what it takes to beat the odds, defy the statistics and embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.
My Project
'Dressing up' is always a struggle for my guys. In many instances, I have allowed them to choose one of my personal ties to wear on special days. I'd love to have them all have access to a tie & blazer on our Men Who Read days.
We need dress blazers, ties, hanky cards, hangers and a rack. It is important that boys' male role models read. If Dad, Grandpa, or Uncles are never seen reading, then a boy will grow up to believe that men do not read, but if a boy grows up seeing the men in his life reading, even if it is a magazine or a newspaper, then he will grow up knowing that men read too. This is why we have taken on the challenge of seeking professional men in the city to come read with male students.
Monthly, all of my boys meet to hear a guest male reader from the community. Many local celebrities, pastors & college athletes have gotten involved in assisting us to raise test scores of male students, who nationally trail behind their female counterparts in reading.
Help make these days more powerful by dressing my gentlemen appropriately.
When this project is fully funded, my gentlemen will be able to 'dress the part.' Their confidence will soar and so will their motivation to read and read well.
This has been a dream and a desire I have carried my entire career. I earnestly believe with your help, this vision will come into fruition. Thank you for your assistance in developing scholarly gentlemen who read and read in style!
