Dissecting Supplies for Zoology

My students need sharks for dissection in Zoology Lab. As part of our Zoology class, we are planning a large fish unit this year.

My Students

Do you remember high school science? Do you remember being excited (or squeamish) when your teacher pulled out a frog to dissect? I do. I remember that being one of my defining moments in career choice. Suddenly, I fell in love with science. I want to share that with my students next year.

My students are remarkable.

They come from a variety of geographic locations and backgrounds. A diverse bunch of learners, I owe it to these students to prepare them well, to offer them hands-on activities, and to keep them excited about learning and discovery. Our school is a very large one for our community. We currently have 1350 students projected for next school year. We have just finished our last phase of construction, which has spanned the last 15 years or so. Unfortunately, budget cuts have hit our state. We no longer have classroom resources as we once did. As I am teaching Zoology, we are in desperate need of help.

My Project

The very first thing students say on the very first day of school in science class is, "What are we dissecting this year?" Unfortunately, we live in a struggling economy with budgets cut deeper every year. Without you, my students will hear a reply of "nothing". In order for my students to fully understand the function of organs, the concept of homeostasis, and various ecological principles, they need a variety of approaches. The injected sharks, dissection guide, and dissection supplies will give students the ability to see how organs work together, what those organs look like, how the form and function of organs work together, and how different organisms share a common physiology.

Through this project, my students will learn: a) Basic Dissection methods b) How form of organs are related to their function c) How tissues form organs, organs form systems, and systems form an entire organism d) How to work together as a team to meet learning goals.

e) Have a memorable learning experience in high school Zoology.
