Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are looking for an "Egg"cellent experience and they need your help this year to make this experience and reality. For the past 4 years, students have built up their 4th grade experience with learning and observing the life cycle of the chicken first hand, but this year not so much.
Currently I teach 64 go-get it students daily, while reaching 350 in arms reach at an urban school, where the entire district is Title 1.
The school educates majority minority students whose need is greater than teachers can provide. We have limited resources, and when those resources are damaged, broken and irreparable, well...there is nothing to replace the experience and opportunity some of those resources can provide.
My Project
Last year, the incubator we used for several years gave out devastatingly and the students were heart broken they couldn't experience the precious milestones that take place in the life cycle of the chicken. Replacing the incubator not only revives the experience but also exposes the students in my classroom and truthfully the entire campus to organisms up close and personal. Currently Life Science is our lowest scoring objective in Science. The best way to master a Science objective is to experience Science hands-on. Students will learn about the life cycle of various organisms in the classroom and observe the life cycle of the chicken using the books and in class incubator. We will observe the cycle from egg to chick. We use the eggs from the hens that started as eggs in our classroom from previous years with the help of a local farmer who adopts the chicks after the in-class lesson is completed.
This donation will improve not only my classroom this year but for years to come.
The impact of inquiry-based learning in the classroom has a long lasting impact on students. Exposure is a deficient in urban schools and the more exposure and inquiry-based experience students have the more successful they will become. This spark students interest in Science and help them to become life-long learners!
