This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach general music in an inner city public school in Indiana.

Our school has almost 800 students who fortunately still have art, music, or physical education sometime during the day. We are a Title I school where every kindergarten through 8th grade student has free breakfast and lunch! Ten classes walk through my door daily: five in the morning and five in the afternoon. Every child has a different "story" but all have something in common: they are eager to learn! My students are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. They come to music willing to sing a new song, learn a folk dance, play a rhythm instrument, choreograph movement to a song, write a rap, work on a composer project, take tests, and write thank you letters to donors from DonorsChoose.org!

My Project

Our school has been very fortunate to have received a three octave set of Malmark bells! For the past five years, middle school students have participated in bell choir! Some of them have been in the group for three years! These kids have shown our school and community what beautiful music they can make by ringing these bells! Every year I am in awe that my students are capable of reading the music and the rhythms. Even more amazing is that they LOVE ringing! Now I would like to share this incredible experience of ringing with my primary students. To have this opportunity, we need a set of Suzuki tone chimes. Although similar in sound to hand bells, these are much easier to play and perfect for the hands of primary students! My goal is to have the middle school handbell choir perform several selections with the primary tone chime choir at our next holiday program! It would sound amazing and both groups would be making beautiful music together!

Music makes our students smarter, and participating in bell choir is a perfect example of this!

Every student who has ever participated in our bell choir has been a great student! We would like to continue this tradition of ringing by ensuring that our primary students have an opportunity to experience the joy of ringing! Thanks for your consideration! We'd LOVE to ring!
