My students need a digital story telling center with a voice recorder, two iPads, and a comfortable reading area including a cushioned bench and a beanbag chair.
A typical day in my classroom is very rigorous! My students are very active and enthusiastic learners.
I teach at a Title One school with 100% of the students qualifying for free lunch.
The majority of students in my classroom have a challenging home life. 67% of our students are English Language Learners and approximately one quarter of those students are refugees from Africa and Asia. Challenges for them include limited English, financial struggles, limited resources, and minimal family support. My students often lack experiences that other children at their age might have had. Unfortunately, my students rarely get the opportunity to utilize technology or even the chance to cozy up with a good book due to poor socioeconomic conditions.
My Project
I am requesting digital voice recorders, two iPads, books, a reading book bench with storage baskets, and two beanbag chairs that my students can use at a digital story telling center. Students will read the books and practice fluency. When they are ready they will read the story into the recorders and then transfer the audio to an iPad. Other students will then be able to listen to the story being read to them by a peer at the listening center. The bench can be used by students while they read their just right books, read with another student during partner reading, or while they listen to an audio book that one of their peers created. The shelf area in the bench can be used to store books in baskets. By using the reading book bench, my students will be able to find enjoyment in reading!
