This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you have a pen pal growing up? Remember checking the mail everyday waiting for a response? My kindergarten students are ready to share ideas with students across the globe instantly using Skype!

Our class is located in a small neighborhood school in central California.

We are a public Title I school, with the majority of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of the children walk to school, as we have no school busing system. The families are hard-working folks who want the best for their children. While we speak only English in our classroom, many of the children speak Spanish, Punjabi, or Vietnamese at home. The children have living situations as varied as they are. Some live in nuclear families, military families, some with single parents, others with foster parents, and still others in multifamily homes. In our classroom, there are students with Autism, ADHD, and speech/language delays.

My Project

When it comes to using technology, my kindergarten students are fearless! At five years-old, my students have not lived in a world without smartphones, the Internet, or even cordless phones. They are digital natives, so we need technology in our classroom to speak their language. The goal of our project is to grant the children the ability to communicate with other classrooms around the world through Skype! I have already made contact with teachers from all over the United States, and the addition of four iPod Touch devices will allow my students the opportunity to share ideas and learning with children thousands of miles away!

One of the greatest skills I can impart on my students is the ability to express their ideas and to work with others.

This project will allow my students the opportunity to do this in digital fashion. It all begins with placing this technology in the hands of some very eager kindergarten learners!
