My students need these screens to sift through their fossil dig material. We also need the fossil material for students to study sediments and aging of materials.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever wondered what it was like to go on a fossil dig or been the first one to discover a woolly mammoth? Have you wondered what it was like to discover a Megalodon shark tooth? I often tell my students to keep their sense of wonder and to explore at the beach.
Our school is in coastal South Georgia, located right beside a large military base.
Due to the large military population that our school serves, we have a very diverse population of students. Many students come from a very high-poverty home situation and this puts a strain on many of the families in trying to support our school financially. However, they still support us fully in ensuring every student is college or career ready.
My Project
My students will love to explore with this fossil dig kit. My oceanography students always struggle when it comes to sediments because we do not have a lot of "fun" manipulatives. This fossil kit will keep them fully engaged and we can use the sieve boxes for other purposes as well. The items that the students find will help bring more interest to the different topics that we will discuss later about human effects on organisms. How did the woolly mammoth and Megalodon go extinct? What part did we have in it?
This fossil kit and refill fossil bags are greatly needed so all of my oceanography classes can be involved in a great hands-on learning manipulative.
They will be excited to find shark teeth, mammal bones, or other fossils. We will be able to discuss the different periods of time. Alfred Wagner's theory and how he was proven right after death due to fossils and sedimentation. This will be a great lab for our class to do. Thank you for this opportunity!
