This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Einstein said, "Everybody is a genius. But If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." My students are fish that need to be returned to the water. They need 21st century technology to show what they know and apply what they learn.

My students are the most resilient bunch of teenagers I have ever met.

They are exceptionally gifted at overcoming learning disabilities, language barriers, and adult issues. Their number one goal in high school is to "get out of small classes" they want so badly to improve their elementary reading and writing skills and join their peers in inclusion classes or at least feel like they are in a 'real' classroom. Their small resource room is limited in supplies and equipment - working with only a chalk board these visual learners struggle to grasp concepts without seeing, doing, and involving themselves in engaging lessons that 21st technology can provide. They attend a school where 65% of the students speak Spanish and participate in the free lunch program. A school that strives to give each student a safe, stable, and consistent environment to come to each day. A school where teachers, administration, and students work together to achieve beyond all perceived limitations.

My Project

My Donors Choose picture sums up the teaching equipment I currently am working with in my classroom. As a special education teacher I understand the importance of individualizing education for each of my students - however, I am struggling to provide students with visual and auditory support. Without technology I am limited in what I can teach my students - these resources would be INVALUABLE to each of their education. I will be able to teach my diverse students in a way they can understand. When we discuss "Shakespeare" I will be able to show him a picture of who he is, when they want a modern day comparison I can show them "West Side Story" or let them listen to Taylor Swift's "Love Story." They can come to the white board and we can use different COLORS to work on sentence structure, grammar, sight words and all the basic skills they desperately need and are desperately lacking. They will be too busy learning to be embarrassed by their small, simple classroom. Please help us!

More than the educational improvements that these resources would provide for my students, they would be so proud to have the same equipment used by their peers.

We all remember being teens... the number one goal for adolescence is to avoid embarrassment. Right now they are embarrassed to be in a small class, but more so they are even more embarrassed that they do not have the resources to demonstrate their abilities to "swim" in a room built for "climbers." These tools would change their lives.
