My students are the most resilient bunch of teenagers I have ever met. They are exceptionally gifted at overcoming learning disabilities, language barriers, and adult issues. Their number one goal in high school is to "get out of small classes" they want so badly to improve their elementary reading and writing skills and join their peers in inclusion classes or at least feel like they are in a 'real' classroom. Their small resource room is limited in supplies and equipment - working with only a chalk board these visual learners struggle to grasp concepts without seeing, doing, and involving themselves in engaging lessons that 21st technology can provide. They attend a school where 65% of the students speak Spanish and participate in the free lunch program. A school that strives to give each student a safe, stable, and consistent environment to come to each day. A school where teachers, administration, and students work together to achieve beyond all perceived limitations.
