Different is GOOD! - Help Me Teach About Differences :)

My students need 17 copies of two book titles: "Esperanza Rising" and "The Boxcar Children Book #1", 17 subscriptions each to Weekly Reader (for 3rd graders) and Time for Kids magazine (for 2nd/3rd graders), a plastic storage cart and stackable letter trays.

I am a 2nd/3rd grade teacher at a Title-I charter school. Over 90% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. I teach all subjects to my students and loop with them from 2nd grade to 3rd grade.

At the end of this last school year, my second graders had the pleasure of welcoming a new student to our class who is Chinese. He is the only Chinese student at our school and his presence in our room has made my students more aware of different people and different cultures. They became excited about learning about different cultures and how different people live. This year, since I'll have them again for 3rd grade, I want to be able to give them the exposure and knowledge that they're craving! I want to teach them about all the different people living in America and how we all interact with one another. This theme carries nicely into our social studies focus this year, which is the early history of Michigan (focusing on Native American Indians and early settlers). We'll be able to explore how these two very different groups of people interacted. We will be writing about what we learn and creating projects to share our knowledge throughout the year on this theme.

In order to make this year-long theme meaningful, engaging, and successful, I need resources! :) All the resources I've requested will help my students learn more about different kinds of people, places, and cultures, or will help them in creating projects that display their learning. Many of my students have never left the area and have not met or been exposed to people from other cultures or people who look different than them. Having these materials and engaging in this year-long educational journey will open up my students' eyes, minds, and hearts to the differences of others sharing their country.

Please help me help my students. You can make it possible for my students to become empathetic, understanding, and accepting individuals (especially being so young, it is the perfect time to teach them acceptance). If we can implement this year-long theme using these resources, we can make a huge impact on these children. With your help, I can give them the education they deserve.
