Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you know that- The Emperor Penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species? Nonfiction texts open up a whole new world of reading to kids. My kids need just-right, leveled, and multi-subject nonfiction books. They need them in order to do research, synthesize, and write.
My students are energetic, kind, and motivated children eager to learn.
They attend a high needs school in the Big Apple. This is my eighth year teaching at this school. I teach an average of 30 students each year.
When students reach third grade, they have been exposed to nonfiction. It is now that they become more sophisticated nonfiction readers. They develop other skills such as researching, analyzing, synthesizing, and reporting. They use their research to produce written accounts. Reading and writing. Writing and reading. They go side by side.
My Project
My students have expressed their interest in certain nonfiction topics. After having experienced hurricane Sandy firsthand, they live and go to school in an area that was highly impacted; my kids have become very fascinating with natural phenomenon. They would like to study hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes among other topics. During their upcoming nonfiction reading and writing units of study, they will read across various sources (books being the major source of information). They will learn how to navigate through the various features of nonfictions texts, research, question, and paraphrase, synthesize, take notes, and ultimately write a feature article about the topic they selected. Seems like a lot of work for seven and eight year olds, right? My kids are capable of this and much more. They just need one thing right now- the right resources. They need nonfiction books.
The nonfiction books I am asking for will help my kids begin to develop some of the skills that will take them through college and further- research, analyze, question, synthesize, and report among others.
