Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Access to computers and the Internet has become a basic need for education in our society," said Kent Conrad and no words could be more true. Computing is not about computers any more. It is about living. Technology is a major part of our culture. The school must provide instruction in technology.

My 1st grade classroom consists of 24 students who are 6 and 7 years old.

The students in my class are hard working, show perseverance, and have good character. They are enthusiastic learners who have a passion for learning and living. My school is new and just opened during the 2010 school year. It is located in the heart of community in a busy city in Southern California. The student population is a wonderful melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. A majority of our students are of Latin descent and come from homes where Spanish is the primary language spoken. A large portion of the students suffer from the effects of poverty, domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, lack of health care, hunger, homelessness, and substance abuse. Nevertheless, the students show an appreciative joy and have a positive attitude when they come to school each day. The school has a mission and vision to focus on the curricular areas of math, science, and technology. A tablet will provide access for all.

My Project

Students will create a power point presentation for their parents for individualized conferences. They will maintain a virtual portfolio which will have their work samples, assessments, photographs, and self-reflections. This will be a way to share their progress all the while they are learning these invaluable technological skills. The tablet will be extremely helpful due to the convenience and mobility of it. Students will be able to have it to use when at the library, computer lab, classroom, and outside. They will be able to do research easily when necessary by accessing the web. They can use it individually to practice skills, take tests, do projects, take notes, keep records, and more. They can also use it collaboratively for group projects. I see the tablet being used a great deal for accessing applications on the internet that help students practice grade level skills and standards. Students will become savvy as to how to navigate touchscreen technology as well.

The impact this Sony tablet will have on this year's students and the students in my classroom for years to come is immeasurable.

There will be endless opportunities for creating, thinking, applying, practicing, recording, and investigating. My students come from homes where computers are a luxury. The reality is that computers and the skills to use them are a necessity. The school must provide this. All students deserve the same education and opportunities.
