Developing a True Multicultural Perspective through Lit.
My students need the following books Things Fall Apart, The Joy Luck Club and The House on Mango Street to help my students to understand the cultural diversity found in books and literature.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a World Literature teacher in Atlanta, I feel that I am subjected to teaching a largely homogeneous culture to my students, due to the fact of the lack of diversity of books in our English department. This lack of knowledge of diversity negatively affects their perception of America and the world.
My students are brilliant and incredibly sincere students.
They are very perceptive to the lack of diversity in the materials that the school does have. They are hungry to learn new and various types of culture, and so am I. I want my children to have these books so that they can feel their voices are being heard.
My Project
My students will use the books (Things Fall Apart, The Joy Luck Club and The House on Mango Street) I'm requesting to travel around the world through the words and worlds they will be reading about in the upcoming year. They will learn that the world is larger than the five mile radius around our community. They will use the information to become citizens of the world.
These book will improve our classroom and my student's life by introducing them to names, objects, and lives that they may have never had an opportunity to hear before.
It will offer a refreshing narrative to my students and build empathy and tolerance towards differences.
