My Students

The biggest challenge facing my students is that they are Deaf and do not have the same exposure to language. Many of them are learning about space and light for the first time. Some of them do not have any background information on our solar system.

My students range from profoundly Deaf to hard of hearing.

Some have cochlear implants and some do not use aids at all. All of them use American Sign Language. They are a curious group of kids that are excited to learn about the world. They learn best when the lesson is visual and hands-on.

My Project

Deaf students need visual representation to help them understand. I am excited about these resources. They will help show the solar system better than I have been able to before. Before I have always tried to have students act out how the planets rotate and I have used balls to show it as well. It has been very frustrating and has had little affect. The model of the planets will help me show pictures of the actual planets and how they orbit. Students can use the CD-ROM and books to gain more information on space. I will be able to use the flashlights to show how the sun hits the planets and causes different seasons. The prism will help me explain how light bends what white light is made of. Students will have several hands on activities with these resources. They will be able to show me how the solar system works and how light bends. Everything will be hands-on!

These materials are visual and hands-on!

I would love my students to fully understand these topics and be able to use that information in other areas of their lives. These materials are perfect for my Deaf students.
