My Students

Pop culture and current events influence the development and perceptions of our students, but are they able to critically evaluate such influences and differentiate fact from fiction?

My students are seniors in a high school in the urban fringe a large city.

They attend a small school with very little diversity and low socioeconomic status, and many come from single-parent homes. Many of these students have never even traveled out of the state of Indiana and do not come from highly educated families. Some will move on to college and excel, but most will continue to live in the same city and not pursue further education.

My Project

Freakonomics is a thrilling informational text that will engage students with interesting tidbits, stories, and facts that expose the reality of pop culture, current events, and problems within our society. During this unit, students will read Freakonomics and engage in discussion, writing activities, and create a blog to deconstruct the influence of pop culture. They will also learn critical skills to evaluate informational text for validity.

Overall, this project will greatly impact my students because they will be exposed to interesting informational text that is relevant to their lives.

They will also become critical consumers of media, pop culture, and current events in order to better understand how to make responsible and informed decisions.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
