This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The responsibility of caring for a plant or animal helps children better understand the value of all living things. Introducing children to the basic concepts of plant needs and characteristics at a young age teaches children how to be respectful of all living things.
I teach first grade at an inner city elementary school in Georgia.
The majority of my students come from low-income families. I teach all subjects to 21 first grade children who are eager to learn. They come to school each day and strive to do their best. Despite the fact that the majority of my students face many obstacles of poverty, they are optimistic and eager about learning. As important as it is to succeed academically, I feel it is also very important to have fun at school as well. I try to incorporate as many ways as possible to make learning hands-on fun for my students.
My Project
One of the first grade science standards in our common core state curriculum requires first grade students to investigate the characteristics and basic needs of plants and animals. We would love to have a variety of plant and gardening materials for investigating the characteristics of various plants. I would love to bring the responsibility of gardening to life in my classroom.
Growing and caring for plants will allow students to learn the responsibility of caring for and nurturing their plant to keep it alive.
It will help foster kindness, respect, patience and empathy for other living beings as well as provide my students with a better understanding of the value of all living things.
