Cultivating Creativity in Writing

My students need 27 flash drives so they can work at school and home, and they need 27 copies of Ralph Fletcher's book, "Writers Notebook: Unlocking the Writer Within You," to help them learn to write about the world around them!

My Students

"The pages are still blank, but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there, written in invisible ink and clamoring to become visible." -Vladimir Nabakov My students are losing their creativity in writing. They want to "finish" the assignment rather than seeing the value of their words.

My students are in a K-8 Chicago land area school.

They are spunky, out-spoken, curious 5th graders. They have lots questions and search for answers. We are fortunate to be able to provide many experiences for our students - especially using technology to experience the world around them.

My Project

I am requesting a classroom set of 8GB flash drives and a class set of Ralph Fletcher's book "A Writer's Notebook". These materials are so important in my classroom. I want to do a book study (keeping their own "notebook" I already bought) with my 11 year-olds as they look at writing in a different way. These resources will help my students look at the world around them as a blank piece of paper - as a way to describe their experiences with vivid words and pictures. Many times teachers have students keep all of their writing at school, but I want to give my students the opportunity to continue their stories at home, to collaborate with others on their writing pieces, and know that if they have an idea it can come to fruition even at home or a friend's house. If students have their own flash drives, this vision can happen. If students see that their world can be brought to life on paper, they won't miss an opportunity in life - they won't miss a chance to document their lives.

Little kids love to tell stories.

Their imaginations run wild as they relay their fantasies about life. When they get to 5th grade and beyond, the majority seem to lose that spark. The imagination is not a priority as they are worrying about other things like grades and friends. I don't want my students to lose story-telling. I want them to continue to love writing, to take in the world and share it through words and pictures. With your donation, I can help them stay excited and creative!
