CSI In School!

My students need replica bones to learn how to identify skeletal remains as part of the forensic anthropology unit in a Forensic Science course.

My Students

"Who-Dun-It?" That's the question we attempt to answer everyday in my forensic science class. In this course, students take a hands-on approach to science as they perform techniques used by actual forensic scientists in order to solve mock crime.

Many of the students who take my forensic science course are low-income students who have been unsuccessful in more traditional science classes, like chemistry and physics.

They thrive on hands-on learning with a practical purpose. Previously, more traditional science courses have turned them off from science. These textbook and lecture-driven courses have led these students to think that science is boring or "too hard." The hands-on, engaging, and practical nature of forensic science restores their interest and reignites their curiosity in science. It is amazing to see students transition from disliking science to enjoying science after completing their first few hands-on lab activities in forensic science! Forensics makes science hands-on, relevant, engaging, and fun for those who simply get lost in the theory behind complex lectures and dense textbooks. Students who would have otherwise given up on science prior to this course become engaged and interested in its application in law.

My Project

Currently, my forensic anthropology unit is lacking. I think it is a disservice to teach forensic science without properly addressing the study of forensic anthropology. Further, students are very interested in this area of the field with the growing popularity of the TV show, Bones. It is difficult to teach this aspect of forensics without having actual bones for students to use. How are students going to learn how to identify remains without having actual "remains" to study? The replica bones included in the Sherlock Bones lab activity kit will enable students to study forensic anthropology in a real, hands-on way. Rather than looking at pictures and reading about forensics anthropology in a textbook, students will actually "become" forensic anthropologists as they learn to identify the age, gender, and race of replicated remains. Students get exposure to how forensic anthropologists work, and they develop the critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills used by scientists.

What is more engaging than a good mystery?

Help ignite student interest in science by providing them with the hands-on labs that they crave. These bones can be used throughout my entire forensic anthropology unit, and they can be used year after year, reaching hundreds of kids. The bones activity will promote interest in science, as it also develops critical thinking skills (as well as math skills) that are essential in today's world. Please help inspire the next wave of future scientists!
