My Students

Help my students think critically about liberty and privacy rights in our world with the help of Orwell and Huxley!

My students go to a traditional high school in an urban area of California.

They are all 1st generation students born to immigrant parents from Mexico and Vietnam. My students come from working families and struggle to get access to materials they need to gain skills for college and beyond. My school does not have the resources to buy novels or new textbooks for my students. I feel that "1984" and "Brave New World" are essential novels for my students to read. My students are in a program in which they take college classes and AP high school classes. At the end of the program, they get their high school diploma and they will have completed 1 year of college. They are incredibly hard working, caring people who frequently participate in community service events. They are involved in school government, spirit events, and sports. They do all of this while taking AP and college classes. They love learning and are very interested in current events and making the world a better place.

My Project

In the spring, I would like to teach my students with 2 dystopian novels, "1984" by George Orwell and "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. My students are very interested in dystopian literature and movies. They are also incredibly interested in current events, specifically the recent controversy behind NSA's Prism program. They are deeply concerned that this program is violating their 4th amendment rights and they want these programs to stop. I would like to weave their interest in this controversy with their love of dystopian literature into a unit including 1984 and Brave New World. This unit would allow them to think critically about the ideas presented in the books such as "Big Brother" and "Doublespeak". It would also enable my students to think about where America is heading in technological world. My students will also think about the future of liberty in America and think about their own ideas of what makes a perfect society

Please, help my students develop critical thinking skills using "1984" & "Brave New World".

My school does not have the resources to buy these novels for my students. I feel these books are essential. The students I will be using these for are 60 seniors on their way to universities across the United States. They are bound for great things. This unit about dystopian literature & American privacy rights will enable them to develop the critical thinking skills they will need in college and beyond.
