Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We change the world around us. Many students have difficulty grasping that concept since their experience with erosion is limited. Stream bed trays would allow students to simulate water erosion. They would also explore ways erosion can be prevented by investigating and manipulating materials.
I teach in a school with a high poverty level.
This past summer I attended the Nebraska KICKS2 sessions and learned of this unique lab experience.
Inquiry is a high priority in my classroom. I try to provide opportunities for students to plan, explore, and apply. Most have not seen examples of erosion and cannot grasp how erosion and weathering occurs. This hands-on activity would allow students the experience and the opportunity to experiment with erosion and ways to prevent it.
My Project
The stream bed trays are specially designed to model soil erosion. Students will be able to see how water can erode soil over time. Students will also plan and experiment with ways to prevent erosion, such as planting "trees" and other plant life.
The trays will be used in multiple settings as students explore soil erosion. They will also have a better understanding of deposition as soil materials are moved. Students will witness the formation of deltas, flooding, movement of pollution, and the changing course of rivers.
Real experience leaves a lasting impression.
Students will have a clearer and deeper appreciation of our changing Earth and the impact of humans by witnessing soil erosion in the stream bed trays. It may also help them become more conscious of the importance of everyone to do their part to take care of the soil.
