Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My high school is a Title 1 school in a very large urban school district. We have a campus full of students from different walks of life. Many students are first generation immigrants. I have taught students that are at-risk as well as students that are considered "over achievers." Our school has a dedicated faculty that works to overcome the obstacles and challenges facing California schools.

What is your passion? Many of my students have found theirs in journalism and design. I came to yearbook seven years ago as an addition to my regular course load and my advising of student council. I have found yearbook to be a creative outlet for many students. Some like the photography, some like the design, some like the journalistic approach to writing. My obstacle is a lack of equipment. We have one classroom camera and 8 classroom computers. I have 34 students. Students assign themselves computer time on a weekly schedule. There is too much down time for too many students. I want them all to have an opportunity to work during class. Why don't we have the resources needed? Yearbook falls under student body funding. That means the same money that funds yearbook, funds football, cheer, band , drill, etc. We fall short.

I am asking for a computer (laptops, we are out of space for desktops). This will allow us to work throughout the school day and meet deadlines. Students will have an opportunity to tell their story. We hope to achieve enough recognition to go to national conventions and perfect their craft.

I recently wrote a letter about a young lady who was impacted by yearbook. Please know that the impact of the experience students have in class has a lasting effect on their future. Many have continued on to careers in journalism. I am proud of my students and I want to give them every opportunity to be successful during their tenure in my classroom and beyond.
