My Students

Students love being read to. They really like listening to stories, especially biographies. They are inspired by the stories, and they benefit from the reading of nonfiction literature which is the most challenging genre in third grade.

We are a rural school in North Carolina with children from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

They are wonderful children who attend a Charter School that focuses on the Arts. The school is one of the A+ schools that uses arts integration to help them academically, and to fuse literature with the arts. The school also focuses on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, which highlights each child's unique learning style. Through this, it is the educator's task to focus on these styles, and teach according to how the children obtain information.

My Project

The listening center will allow the children, especially my struggling students the opportunity to hear various stories in a center with children on their level. It will also allow them to read and record stories and to listen to themselves read. This will allow them to work on their reading fluency, and to learn new vocabulary.

These materials will help students for years to come.

There will always be students who struggle academically. The listening center will assist students in gaining comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills which will help them to become appreciative of great works of literature, and to be productive citizens in their communities.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
