Creating A Sacred Place: Altar Project

My students need 75 boxes, paint, brushes, poster board, colored pencils and regular pencils to design and build their three dimensional altars.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Despite their young age, many of my students have faced loss and transition. Creating art to honor the things they have lost is a powerful vehicle for healing.

My students attend a continuation high school in the East Bay.

They are predominantly Latino, African American, and Pilipino. Many have struggled with school and are behind in credits to graduate. Why do they end up at a continuation high school? Their life stories are varied: many have lost a parent or close relative. Some have been touched by gang violence or are gang affiliated. They may have friends in juvenile hall or have recently returned from juvenile hall. They became pregnant, and suddenly were balancing parenthood, school, and work. Others were simply overwhemeld by large class sizes and fell through the cracks. Or they are English Language Learners struggling academically. Most of our students want to graduate and are working toward a new, positive future for themselves.

My Project

With the art supplies requested, my students will be able to create small portable altars to honor those close to them who have died. They may also choose to create an alter for something or someone sacred to them. I have requested 75 small boxes with lids, acrylic paint, poster board, brushes and pencils to cover the basics of this project. The other materials for this project are recycled goods or found objects which cannot be bought via the Internet. In the past, students have created altars for friends who have died, parents, and grandparents. They have also commemorated musicians and public figures that they found inspirational. About a quarter of my students are immigrants, and they have created altars to the countries they left behind.

Due to life circumstances, my students have dealt with loss to a greater degree than the average teenager.

Even if they have not had a close friend or relative die, many have changed schools, lived in different households, or faced economic hardships. Having the power to create a small sacred space to commemorate what they love can empower them.
