Creating a Culture of Readers

My students need 25 copies of Tony Dungy's Quiet Strength to revive their love of reading and connect them to valuable lessons of leadership and responsibility.

My Students

Too many avid readers lose interest in reading by the time they reach 12th grade. I am starting a 12th grade book club and am working especially hard to find books that will engage young men who don’t think reading is “cool” or worth their time. I am promoting the book Quiet Strength to them.

These high school seniors need the opportunity to read engaging books that give them positive messages and a new perspective on the world.

I am excited about letting them discover the fun of being involved in informal book clubs, where reading can be more social.

My Project

Quiet Strength is an autobiography by Tony Dungy that reveals his thoughtful, ethical leadership style, as well as the lessons of mentors along the way to his successful NFL coaching career. Diligent study of his Christian faith guided and supported him through challenges and tragedies, and allowed him to become a leader who can bring out the very best in others. To truly be great, we must seek our goals not for our own glory, but for the greater good.

Older students will benefit from this engaging read and its positive message.

Many gave up reading when they finished the Harry Potter series, I want them to see themselves as life-long readers.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
