Cracking Open an EGG-Cellent Learning Experience!

My students need a chick life exploration set and incubator/brooding materials including chick starter, three feeders, three water bases, an egg candler, three thermometers, clamps, and bulbs!

My Students

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? We may not answer this age-old question, but we would like to investigate and witness the life cycle of chickens first-hand, all while incorporating this unique experience into science, math, reading, and even writing!

My group of fourth graders are extremely bright, witty, and ready to explore each and every day!

We live in a very rural community surrounded by woods and farmland, but we would not change it for anything. We are proud of where we live and how we have grown to overcome many challenges. Our district is relatively new, and the goals we have achieved are astounding. Even at 80% free and reduced-price lunch rates, we have been ranked second in our conference for student achievement. Low income does not equal low expectations for our students!

My Project

Students will use these materials in an inquiry activity of hatching chicken eggs in the classroom. We will add the thermometer, heat bulbs, watering jar, and feeder to our incubators/brooders that we are hand-making ourselves. The egg candler will allow us to take a peek into the development of the eggs before they hatch. In the meantime while waiting for hatching day, we will use the chick life exploration set to investigate the life cycle of chickens even further!

This project will make our chick-hatching project possible.

We are making our own incubators/brooders, but these materials are also necessary to hatch chicks and make this project an educational success. This is sure to be an activity to be remembered, all with your help!
